multi organ transplant

Multi-organ transplant programme at Aster MIMS is empowered by a highly skilled team of medical professionals with technical expertise, performing different transplants including heart-liver, liver-kidney, heart-kidney and heart-lung-liver. Surgeons remove the diseased, failing organ with a healthy one using different transplant surgical procedures assisted by innovative techniques. These techniques have been the result of years of research and help reduce immunosuppressant usage, create synthesis transplants and advance stem cells, ensuring better patient care. Backed by state-of-the-art facilities such as dedicated Intensive Care Units, sophisticated diagnostic and radiology facilities and advanced operating theatres, the transplant centre is one of the best in the country. The centre also boasts tools required for safe surgery, including, ultrasonic blood vessel sealing systems, surgical aspirators and laser coagulators and a specialty blood bank.

Liver Transplant

A life-saving surgical procedure for many a people, liver transplantation is the second most commonly performed organ tranplantation, which shows the predominance of liver conditions. Liver, being the largest internal organ, performs many important functions including preventing infections, toxin removal from the blood, immune control, processing nutrients, medications and hormones, and so on. A healthy liver, when damaged, can generate most of its own cells. If not healthy, it may lead to acute or chronic liver failure which may necessiate a liver tranplant for the survival of the victim. A liver transplantation is often advised for patients with conditions such as chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, biliary cholangitis and alcoholic fatty liver. The procedure involves removal of the diseased liver and replacing it with a healthy liver from a donor. The transplant is recommended only after assessing the medical condition of the patient.
Our expert team comprising multi-organ transplant surgeons, hepatologists, anaesthesiologists, critcal care experts, diagnostic radiologists, interventional radiologists, infection control physicians, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists supported by many other medical personnel together are trained extensively on liver transplantation. At Aster MIMS, we make sure the patient is given adequate pre- and post-operative care keeping in mind all the potential post-operative complications.

Kidney Transplant

As kidneys become diseased, they lose their ability to function resulting in a condition called end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. Kidney transplant is one among the few recommended treatment options that offers the best prospects, given that the transplanted kidney functions successfully. It is advised when the damage cannot be managed medically anymore. The diseased kidney is replaced with a healthy one received from either a living or non-living donor. During the operation, the kidney is placed in the patient’s pelvis rather than the usual kidney location in the back. The artery that carries blood to the kidney and the vein that removes blood from it are surgically connected to two blood vessels in the pelvis. The ureter, or tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder, is transplanted through an incision in the bladder.
The process, from evaluation to organ transplantation, at Aster MIMS is initiated by team of doctors, surgeons, nurses, case managers and other clinicians and is well managed at every stage helping the patient return to a full and productive life. On completion of the implantation, the person will be advised to take immunosuppressant medicine every day for a period of time to prevent rejection of the kidney.

Lung Transplant

Heart-lung transplantion, also referred to as cardiopulmonary transplantation, is a major but rare surgical procedure involving the simultaneous replacement of a patient’s diseased heart and lungs with those of a recently deceased donor. The procedure is performed on patients with end-stage cardiopulmonary failures ranging from congenital cardiac anomalies to pulmonary hypertension, and to treat cystic fibrosis occasionally. The procedure is recommended after an in-depth assessment of the patient’s physical and mental health. A heart-lung transplant is not recommended for aged, those with cancer, alcohol or drug addicts, obese or if the patient has a persisting mental health condition.
At Aster MIMS, we have a team of specialists who perform heart-lung transplantations in both adults and children through a multidisciplinary approach. Backed by advanced technologies, they ensure a speedy recovery of patients and help them return to a normal life with an increased quality of life.

Bone Marrow Transplant

A non-surgical procedure unlike other implantations, bone marrow transplant is performed to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow stem cells. Bone marrow transplant is advised for patients with conditions such as leukaemia, aplastic anaemia and other immune system or genetic diseases. The diseased stem cells are removed completely through a conditioning therapy via high doses of radiation or chemotherapy. The patient will be infused with healthy stem cells obtained from the donor and they multiply their own, promoting the growth of new bone marrow. The engraftment of stem cells may take from 10 to 28 days.
At Aster MIMS, specialists from many specialties come together to perform bone marrow transplantation. From evaluation to the process and post transplantation, they ensure the best possible transplant outcome with the patient’s return to the wellness.

Cornea Transplant

Often referred to as Keratoplasty, the cornea transplantation involves the removal of all or a part of a damaged cornea and replacing it with healthy donor tissue. The transplantation is often advised to improve vision, relieve pain or treat acute eye infection or damage. Transplantation is recommended when vision cannot be corrected satisfactorily with eyeglasses or contact lenses or if medications will not help anymore.
The experts at Aster MIMS make sure the donor cornea tissue is free from different malicious viruses. The cornea is also checked for clarity. The implantation is done with utmost accuracy at state-of-the-art facilities by an outstanding team of specialists with a multidisciplinary approach. An outpatient procedure, the surgical procedure usually takes only an hour or two mostly. The patient may be recommended to spend additional one or two hours in the recovery room.
